Peng Soon-Liu Ying lose second consecutive match in Tokyo

Tokyo – Chan Peng Soon-Goh Liu Ying saw their chances of qualifying to mixed doubles quarter-finals go up in smoke after a straight game 12-21, 15-21 defeat against Germans Mark Lamsfuss-Isabel Herttrich.

The Malaysians, who played late in the evening on Saturday, did not look like they had recovered from their three-game exertions against Tang Chun Man-Tse Ying Suet which they lost.

Lamsfuss-Herrtich were fully aware of that, and applied the pressure from the start with a furious attacking display which Chan-Goh had no answer to.

With the lanky Lamsfuss constantly on the offense on the back court, Herttrich was able to dictate the front court far better than Goh.

The world number seven pair did try to stage a mini revival in the opening game, but it never materialised and they lost 12-21.

Sensing the Malaysians were there for the taking, the Germans maintained their high pressing, with plenty of smashes directed at Goh who was floored several times.

Goh was clearly nursing a right knee discomfort and at one point had to take a time out to assess the injury.

It was all over soon enough as Lamsfuss-Herttrich eventually strode to a 21-15 win to keep their hopes alive in Group D.

For the 2016 runners-up, Monday’s showdown against Chinese second seeds Wang Yi Lyu-Huang Dong Ping is almost a mere formality after losing two consecutive matches. — Stadium Astro
