Winning start for national women’s singles shuttlers at Spanish International

Kuala Lumpur – Three Malaysian women’s singles shuttlers got off to a winning start in the Spanish International 2021 championships at La Nucia yesterday.

Former junior world champion Goh Jin Wei got the ball rolling when she outclassed Spain’s Ana Ramirez 21-5, 21-7 in just 19 minutes.

She will take on the winner of the tie between French player Leonice Huet and England’s Abigail Holden in the second round.

Fourth seed and 2019 SEA Games champion S. Kisona defeated Switzerland’s Nadia Fankhauser 21-15, 21-10 to set up a second-round date with Spain’s Lucia Rodriguez.

Malaysia’s third women’s singles player, Eoon Qi Xuan then beat England’s Freya Redfearn 21-9, 21-15 to set up a daunting second-round clash against third seed Marie Batomene of France.

National mixed doubles pair Tee Kai Wun-Teoh Mei Xing also cleared their opening-round hurdle by edging Bulgarians Iliyan Stoynov-Hristomira Popovska 21-13, 21-17. The Malaysian will face fourth seed Dominik Stipsits-Serena Au Yeong of Austria next.

However, men’s singles player Lim Chong King was eliminated in the opening round after going down 17-21, 15-21 to Jan Louda of the Czech Republic.

Earlier, Misbun Ramdan Misbun cleared the qualifying rounds to advance to the main draw. He beat German Brian Holtschke 21-10, 21-13 in the final round of the qualifiers to set up a clash against Yanis Gaudin of France next. — Bernama
